Paediatric Occupational Therapist Children’s Key Word Sign Poster – AAC Communication Poster (48 Signs)
Support children’s communication development with our Children’s Key Word Sign Poster, a practical and engaging AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) resource designed for homes, therapy clinics, and educational environments.
Created in collaboration with a Paediatric Occupational Therapist on the Sunshine Coast, this poster features 48 essential Key Word Signs (KWS) that support everyday communication, play, routines, and emotional expression. It includes both core and fringe vocabulary, making it a versatile learning tool for children who are developing speech or who experience communication challenges.
⭐ What is Key Word Signing?
Key Word Signing (KWS) is a communication approach that combines spoken language with simple signs, gestures, and facial expressions to highlight important words within a sentence.
The signs are inspired by Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and are used alongside speech to support children who:
• Are pre-speaking or late talkers
• Experience communication difficulties
• Use AAC communication supports
• Benefit from visual learning and gestures
Research and practice show that Key Word Signing can help reduce frustration, increase understanding, and support speech development.

The poster features a combination of everyday core words and play-based fringe vocabulary, including:
I/Me, You, Help, Stop, Same, Ready, Want, Eat, Drink, Go, Different, Heavy, More, Finish, Play, Wait, Big, Open, Break, Sit, Jump, Climb, Small, Close, Draw, Stand, Hop, Squish, On, In, Toilet, House, Bubbles, Crash, Off, Out, Game, Fidget Toy, Hammock, Cushion, Choice, Up, Ball, Swing, Tunnel, Blanket, Blocks, Down.
